Workshop: Creating Symbols for Meaning with Karen Comer

This workshop is open to adults who want to write for a Young Adult audience, regardless of where they are in their process. Karen will guide participants to: create a symbol of meaning for their book; consider how this symbol can measure their character’s growth; weave in layers of meaning around their theme; and consider their symbol’s change or stasis.

Karen Comer is a Melbourne-based freelance editor and an experienced writing workshop facilitator for both children and adults. Earlier in her career, she worked extensively in educational publishing and served as the editor for the children’s art magazine, BIG.

Karen’s debut novel, Grace Notes (2023), has achieved extraordinary critical acclaim. It was awarded the prestigious 2024 CBCA Book of the Year for Older Readers and has been shortlisted for several of Australia’s most high-profile honors, including the Ethel Turner Prize for Young People’s Literature, the UTS Glenda Adams Award for New Writing, and the 2024 Prime Minister’s Literary Award for Young Adult Literature.
